Avatar: Ops Center

I had the pleasure of working with Ben Procter on bring his Ops Center into Virtual Production.  Because the version of Motionbuilder during production had an 8 light limit, all of the lighting was baked into the texture maps.  This resulted in a live capture frame rate of over 250 fps.  Changing to this virtual set after struggling with the expansive and often low fps jungle sets lifted the spirits of everyone on the stage… but doomed everyone in the Virtual Art Department (VAD) to make their Virtual Environments much faster.

Prior to working on this set with me, Ben Procter would always used automatic UV mapping to apply textures.

Production Designer Rick Carter had me change the design of the Virtual Set because the set builders in New Zealand were having difficulties matching the duct work.  Rick believed Jim would reference the Virtual Environment when he noticed the difference.
